Dental Crowns in Surrey
What are Dental Crowns?
Teeth with deep or wide cavities, fractures, root canals, or chips may need to be crowned. Unlike a filling, which is a direct restoration placed by the dentist in one visit, a dental crown is an indirect restoration. Crowns are fabricated by a dental technician in a dental lab. Whereas a filling is inserted into a tooth, a crown covers a tooth to the gum line on all sides. Crowns may also be called caps. Dr. Chohan uses ceramic, porcelain fused to metal (PFM), zirconia, and gold crowns.
Who Needs Dental Crowns?
One of the most common signs that you need a crown is a toothache. Often, toothaches occur when a tooth is infected, has a cavity, or has a fracture. Dental crowns may be recommended for the following situations:
- To repair tooth decay
- To repair a crack
- To repair a fracture
- To hide permanent stains
- To reshape a misshapen tooth
- To replace a failing filling
- After root canal therapy
- To anchor a bridge
What to Expect at a Dental Crown Appointment
If you need a crown, Dr. Chohan will administer anesthetic, prepare your tooth, and take impressions at your first visit. The impressions will be delivered to a dental lab, where a technician will create your restoration. In the meantime, you’ll wear a temporary crown. Within a few weeks, you’ll return to our office, and the doctor will replace your temporary with the permanent crown.
Remember, if you suffer from stress and anxiety at dental appointments, tell us. Dr. Chohan can administer a sedative to make your visits comfortable.
What to Expect Following Treatment
After your temporary is placed, if it cracks, loosens, or falls out, give us a call. Though rare, these issues can occur. We will simply reattach your temporary crown or create a new one. Once your final crown is secured, you can care for it as you would a natural tooth. Brush twice and floss once a day. Visit Dr. Chohan for six-month checkups and cleanings. If the crown feels odd after a few days, it may require adjustment. Just call us, and we’ll be happy to take care of you.
