Have you been thinking about improving your smile? Well, we have a little incentive for you…
When most people think of their teeth, they don’t often realize how their dental care (or lack thereof) ties into their overall health.
For example, did you know that bleeding gums could essentially lead to a stroke or heart attack? Harmful bacteria can make it’s way into your bloodstream, and if the bacteria bonds to the platelets in your blood, blood clots can form.
This can also lead to disorders of your digestive or respiratory systems, an increased risk of cancer of your pancreas, and the development of diabetes.
Plus, did you ever hear about this staggering figure? … Approximately 3,200 Canadians are diagnosed with oral cancer every single year. About 1050 of those people will die from it. (Source: Canadian Dental Association)
Your dentist has the training and experience to detect oral cancer early. Let this be a reminder for you to make your next dental appointment. It could save you and your family’s life!
If you are located in the Surrey area, call Healthy Smiles Family Dentistry and book that appointment: 604-593-8201! We have Saturday appointments available if you are unable to make it during the week.
Are you one of our Surrey Invisalign clients? Getting a lot of information at once can feel overwhelming, so we put together a post to remind you how to take care of your aligners.
Cleaning
Take your Invisalign aligners out of your mouth before eating … and then brush your teeth after every meal before putting them back in.
You can brush your Invisalign aligners with a toothbrush and regular toothpaste, rinsing in luke warm water. Alternatively, you can use a special formula created by Invisalign, called the Invisalign Cleaning System.
Be sure to always keep your aligners away from hot water, as that could warp the plastic and cause the aligner to lose it’s proper shape.
If you drop your aligner(s) by accident, always clean them to ensure they are hygienic again before placing them back in your mouth. (There’s not much more disgusting that putting something dirty in your mouth, after all…so you likely don’t need a reminder about this, but we need to tell you anyways…)
What Do I Do If I Lose or Break One of My Invisalign Aligners?
If this happens, as things do, be sure to call your dental office immediately so they can take the appropriate steps to get you a replacement asap so that your treatment doesn’t go off course. They will advise you as to what to do until you receive your replacement.

It goes without saying that pretty much everyone likes chocolate…and when a special holiday rolls around, it gives us the excuse to indulge. We’re not complaining though…are you? I mean, who can pass up a chocolate bunny, right?
So, here’s the deal … enjoy your Easter chocolate, but be sure to choose higher quality chocolate. It won’t just be better for your health (and house some antioxidants), but it will be easier on your teeth!
As long as you select dark chocolate with a cocoa percentage of 70% and above, you can reap the benefits, such as:
Sure, it will cost you a bit more, but it’s worth it! Cheap chocolate is overflowing with sugar. White chocolate isn’t any better.
Choose the healthy path, and of course, be sure to brush thoroughly afterwards.

We’ve previously talked about anodontia and hypodontia … and now we’re going to touch on oligodontia.
What is oligodontia?
When someone is born without one or more teeth, it is referred to as “dental agenesis”, which is one of the most common congenital conditions. Oligodontia is a type of agenesis that causes you to be born without six or more teeth.
What are the different causes of absent teeth from birth?
Since oligodontia has various underlying causes, people are affected in different ways. Some people may experience few to no symptoms. Others may notice changes to facial appearance, or difficulty chewing or speaking.
Your dentist or dental surgeon will be able to help guide you in the right direction in terms of treatment, which may involve dental implants, partial dentures, or fixed bridges.

We’ve previously talked about anodontia … and now we’re going to touch on hypodontia.
What is hypodontia?
Babies are born with tooth buds, which are required to develop their full sets of primary and permanent teeth. Trauma, infection, environmental influences, or certain genetic patterns can pop up, however, and interfere with the formation of teeth under the gums.
In sum, when a child is born missing one or more of their tooth buds, this is known as hypodontia.
Missing teeth clearly affects the ability to chew and can chip away at one’s confidence. Plus, when there are missing teeth in your mouth, other teeth can shift and move into that space. That said, hypodontia can lead to things like insufficient bone growth, gum damage, and problems with speech.
Your dentist will be able to assess the situation, diagnose missing teeth, and make suggestions for appropriate tooth replacement.
Replacement options include: dental implants, partial dentures, fixed bridges…and in some cases, orthodontic treatment may work as well.
With the dental technology available today, there is always a solution.
Visit your dentist regularly to keep on top of your child’s dental care…as well as to ensure they get professional cleanings and checkups every six months.

When it comes to vaping and e-cigarettes, many people are misinformed. It seems so “harmless”, compared to smoking regular tobacco. There is nothing light-hearted about it, though…and it is actually very dangerous for your health.
Vaping can lead to all kinds of negativity, including:
So, if you are currently a vaper, we hope this gives you some motivation to quit. There’s nothing as important as your health, after all!

What is Anodontia?
Anodontia is an inherited genetic defect, more common in females, where some teeth never grow into place. (The specific gene mutation is unknown). This clearly creates a severe problem with functionality and aesthetics.
Anodontia is often associated with something referred to as ectodermal dysplasia, which is a group of hereditary conditions that affect skin, sweat glands, hair, and nails.
What Can People with Anodontia Do About This?
Dentists may recommend bridges, dentures, or dental implants.
How is it Diagnosed?
Dentists take panoramic x-rays to determine exactly what is going on beneath the gums.
